Roasting chestnuts, hot mulled wine and unique trinkets — nothing gives you that wintery feeling quite like a Christmas market. Here is our round-up of some of Europe’s best markets for you to visit on your Yuletide Roadtrip!
Christmas Market No. 1… Berlin, Germany
Rather than a just one market, Berlin has around 60 dotted throughout the whole city. One of the best is at Charlottenburg Castle; here you can find fairground rides for kids, a vast array of stalls selling traditional items and some fantastic illuminations on the castle itself. Gendarmenmarkt is the place to get your stocking fillers and hand-crafted Christmas decorations, or head to the market at Potsdamer Platz if you fancy a go at some ice skating!
When to go: 21 November to 31 December, 2016.
Christmas Market No. 2…Paris, France
Paris gets a brand new lease of life throughout winter, when it “transforms from City of Lights to City of Fairylights” according to The Daily Telegraph. Visit the Christmas market on the Champs-Elysées, where you can try your hand at ice skating or sip mulled wine while admiring the views of the Place de la Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe. Try escaping the crowds and explore the glamorous Avenue Montaigne, which has some of the most beautiful Christmas lights in the town. Other Christmas markets are located at Montmartre, Place Saint-Sulpice and the Trocadero (opposite the Eiffel Tower).
When to go: Mid-November, 2016, to January, 2017.
Christmas Market No. 3…Vienna, Austria
Vienna has one of the oldest Christmas-market traditions in Europe, dating all the way back to 1294 when the King granted traders the right to hold a Krippenmarkt (crib market) in the city. Nowadays you can choose from a selection of over 20 different markets — we would recommend the charming Spittelberg Christmas Market, hidden in the cobbled streets near the Museumsquartier, for its welcoming atmosphere and artisan craft stalls.
When to go: 12 November-24 December, 2016.
